February 16, 2015

PSD policy specialist responsible for this list: J. Young

CLASSIFICATION

BP166.787

The related subject proposal Takfīr (Islam) was not approved (see below). In accordance with that decision, the work should be classified at BP168. The classification proposal was not approved.

F27.M25

Islands that lie within counties are typically classified with the county. Malaga Island is in Sagadahoc County, Maine. An including note will be added to F27.S18. The proposal was not approved.

F1228.5.T5

F1228.5.A-Z consists of a list of countries.  Geographic names to not need to be editorially established, per CSM F 350 sec. 2. The proposal was not necessary.

LC3993.4

The teaching of mathematics at any level is classified in QA11-20. The proposal was not approved.

N3477

A reference at the top of this hierarchy states, “For histories, treatises, catalogs, etc. of special collections prefer classification by medium, subject, period, or nationality.”  A guidebook to the Museo del Greco should be classed with El Greco’s paintings in ND813.4. The proposal was not approved.

PG2974.P57

Classification numbers for literary prizes are assigned to works about the prize (e.g., works about their histories or selection committees).  The work being cataloged is a collection of the Russian short stories that have won a literary prize and should be classified as a collection of Russian prose fiction in PG3270-3279. The proposal was not approved.

PN4390

Not all blogs are diaries, so the meeting prefers not to include blogs in the classification number for diaries.  Instead, a separate number, PN4393, will be added to the schedule. The proposal was not approved.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Announcement

Subfield coding in the 682 field

In order to better support automated linking, the Policy and Standards Division has revised its policy on the coding of the 682 field (Deleted Heading Information) of cancelled LCSH, Children’s Subject Headings, LCGFT, and LCMPT authority records.
Currently, the LCCN of the heading that replaces the one being cancelled is coded in subfield $i, which is intended for explanatory text, not control numbers. Going forward, all LCCNs should be coded in $0, which is repeatable. Each LCCN must be preceded by LC’s organization code, DLC. The LCCNs will now appear as follows.

682 ## $i This authority record has been deleted because the heading is covered by the subject heading $a [heading] $0 (DLC)shXXXXXXXXXX

682 ## $i This authority record has been deleted because the subject heading is covered by an identical name heading $0 (DLC)n XXXXXXXXXX

682 ## $a This authority record has been deleted because the heading is covered by the subject headings $a [heading] $0 (DLC)shXXXXXXXXXX $i and $a [heading] $0 (DLC)shXXXXXXXXXX

Note that the LCCN is no longer contained within parentheses, nor is there a period at the end of the field.

Effective immediately, all proposals to cancel subject headings and medium of performance and genre/form terms should include the new coding. Proposals that have already been submitted will be adjusted by LC staff.  SHM instruction sheet H 193.5 will be revised.  Records with the new coding will begin to be distributed no earlier than April 7, 2015.

Other decisions:

Africa, Central

This proposal sought to modify the scope note by adding a sentence referencing Rhodesia and Nyasaland.  References to headings established in the name authority file are not generally made unless the heading is already included in the subject authority file. The proposal was not approved.

Antitrust law

The proposed UF Monopolies—Law and legislation is equivalent to antitrust law only in those jurisdictions that prohibit monopolies.  The proposal was not approved.

ʻAwāsij (Arab tribe)

The BT provided is Ethnology—Yemen (Republic), but the reference source cited indicates that this tribe is from Libya.  No other information was provided to allow the meeting to adjust the BT if appropriate. The proposal may be resubmitted with a revised BT or source citation, or both.

Bath Racecourse (England)

A cataloger’s note in the proposal says that a map depicts this racecourse as being well outside the city of Bath. The source citations in the record, however, indicate that the racecourse is on Lansdown Hill, which is within Bath, and the address provided indicates that it is within the postal town of Bath. An Internet search yields conflicting information: that Lansdown is either a section of Bath, or a suburb of Bath. Lansdown is not established in the name authority file, nor is it listed in Geonet.

The cataloger is requested to confirm the location of Bath Racecourse. If it is in the city of Bath, it should be qualified by that city. If it is within a populated place named Lansdown, Lansdown should be established in the name authority file and should be the qualifier on the heading for the racecourse. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Bronnai͡a Hara Massacres, Bronnai͡a Hara, Belarus, 1942

There was no evidence provided that the events to which this proposal refers are commonly known as the Bronnai͡a Hara Massacres; a cataloger’s note in a bibliographic record is not evidence of usage.  If reference sources supporting the choice of heading cannot be found, the heading Massacres—Belarus—Bronnai͡a Hara should be assigned instead.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Cattle—Parturition grounds

Cattle is a pattern heading for animals, and this proposal was made to establish a new free-floating subdivision for use under various other animals (e.g., mule deer).  SHM H 1146 sec. 3 states, “Any subdivision that is not appropriate for use under the pattern heading(s) of a particular category is not eligible to be added to the list of pattern subdivisions established for the category, nor can it be granted free-floating status.  When such a subdivision is required for a work being cataloged, establish it under the specific heading assigned to the work.”  The subdivision –Parturition grounds is not appropriate under Cattle.  Proposals to establish the subdivision under specific headings may be resubmitted.

Digital literacy

LCSH includes the headings Computer literacy, Technological literacy, Information literacy, Internet literacy, and Media literacy, all of which overlap somewhat with the proposed heading. The meeting does not wish to introduce another term that will further divide similar works from each other. Digital literacy is closest in scope to Computer literacy, so a UF Digital literacy will be added to the existing heading. The proposal was not approved.

Dijon (France)—History—Siege, 1513

This proposal appears to be unfinished. A BT for a war or a historical period of France was not provided, and the meeting could not determine which one should be added because there was no research provided. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Figure skating—Choreography

This proposal included UFs for the choreography of ice dancing.  The meeting does not wish to conflate the choreography of figure skating with that of ice dancing.  Proposals for two separate headings may be resubmitted.

Football—Tournaments

Research showing that football contests are called tournaments was not provided.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Fort Victoria (Isle of Wight, England)

Fort Victoria was decommissioned in 1962.  According to SHM H 405, all post-1899 military installations are established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.

Hockomock Swamp (Mass.)

GNIS was cited as required, but the variant names that GNIS lists were not.  The variants should be cited in the 670 field and provided as UFs. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Holland International Speedway (Holland, N.Y.)

The UF for Holland Speedway was not supported with a citation.  If a citation cannot be found, the UF should be removed. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Interior decoration—Tropics

Interior decoration may be geographically subdivided. The proposal was not necessary.

Kealakehe Regional Park

This proposed heading needs to be qualified by either Hawaii or the name of a city, but the park’s location was not provided in the source citations.  The proposal may be resubmitted with a qualifier and a source citation indicating the location of the park.

Kura River (Turkey)

Geonet was not cited, although such a citation is required by SHM H 690. Geonet indicates that there are multiple rivers named Kura or Kuruçay in Turkey, but there was no information provided in the proposal to allow the meeting to determine which of those rivers is being established. The meeting also notes that one of the BTs provided, Rivers—Caucasus, South, is invalid; the BTs should reflect the country or countries through which the river flows, not the geographic region. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Maxims, Persian

The proposal includes a classification number that has to be proposed.  The subject proposal may be resubmitted along with a classification proposal.

Pisatelʹ goda

The UF for the variant form of the name of this literary prize is not supported by the source citation. In addition, the UF should probably be the heading, since headings for prizes usually reflect the full name of the prize. Finally, if the prize is awarded within a specific country or countries, that fact should be reflected in the BT and supported by a citation. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Takfīr (Islam)

There was a UF Excommunication—Islam provided in the record. Several authoritative sources were cited in the proposal, and they did not equate takfīr with excommunication; the only source cited that used the word excommunication was Wikipedia.  The meeting would like to take this opportunity to reiterate that Wikipedia is not considered to be authoritative for subject development purposes, particularly when the information found there conflicts with information found in more authoritative sources.

According to the authoritative sources cited in the record, takfīr is a close equivalent to the English words apostate and apostasy.  A UF Takfīr (Islam) will be added to the existing heading Apostasy—Islam. The proposal was not approved.

Thunderstreak (Jet fighter plane)

This proposal sought to add UFs for the Thunderflash, a jet reconnaissance plane, to the existing heading for a jet fighter plane. The website of the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force confirms that the Thunderstreak and the Thunderflash are different planes.  A separate proposal for the Thunderstreak may be resubmitted.

Twierdza Grudziądz (Grudziądz, Poland)

Twierdza Grudziądz was an active military installation at least through World War II. According to SHM H 405, all post-1899 military installations are established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.
