Back to Summary of Decisions

November 18, 2013

PSD policy specialist responsible for this list: J. Young

CLASSIFICATION

B3318.E38

As noted in several recent Summaries of Decisions, works on the philosophy of a subject class with the subject.  The work appears to be an analysis of Nietzsche’s philosophy and knowledge of education and should be classed in LA126-131 or LB1025-1025.3, depending on the specific focus.  The proposal was not approved.

DS269.Q5

The meeting has requested that the related subject proposal for Qizilbash (Turkic people) be resubmitted (see below).  In addition, the cutter on the classification proposal should contain at least two digits, according to the current practice.  A revised classification proposal may be resubmitted with the revised subject proposal.

K487.W37

The work is not about the relationship between war and law, but about the international law of war, and should be classified in KZ6385. The proposal was not approved.

PQ4055.Y68

The work being cataloged appears to be a criticism of the works of several young adult and/or teenage authors, but the classification number proposed represents the depiction of young adults in Italian literature. In addition, the first subject heading assigned is used for works written for teenagers, not works by teenage authors, and the second subject heading is incorrectly formulated. The meeting requests that the cataloger re-examine the work and make adjustments to both the subject headings and classification number. If necessary, a proposal for PQ4063.5.Y+, young adults as a special class of Italian authors, may be resubmitted.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

                        H 1147, Animals
$x Effect of energy development on

Other decisions:

Art and agriculture

This heading would represent the relationship between art and agriculture at a broad level and from the perspectives of both topics (see SHM H 310).  However, the work cataloged appears to be about the practice of agriculture as an art form. Headings in the form [. . .] in art have been used in similar cases.  Agriculture in art is already established and should be assigned. The proposal was not necessary.

Bone crushing machines

This proposal is too specific for a general vocabulary such as LCSH.  The editorial meeting recommends that libraries that need specialized headings of this type create them as local headings rather than proposing them for inclusion in LCSH. The LCSH headings Crushing machinery and Bones may be assigned to the work being cataloged.  The proposal was not approved.

Bothies (Dwellings)

Dictionaries indicate that bothy is a word meaning hut in the British Isles, and particularly in Scotland. Bothies (Dwellings) will be added as a UF to the existing heading Huts. The proposal was not approved.

Calendars

This proposal was made to add the UFs Pocket calendars and Wall calendars to the existing heading. The meeting does not wish to add UFs for types of calendars to this heading. The proposal was not approved.

Hidimbā (Hindu mythology)

Effective in August 2013, individual named deities should be established in the name authority file (see SHM H 1635).  The proposal was not approved.

Horsell Common (England)

According to the sources cited, Horsell Common is in the town of Horsell. SHM H 1925 indicates that the heading should be qualified by the name of the town; the town needs to be established in the name authority file first.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Indic drama (Comedy)

This proposal appears to be incomplete since it does not include any of the required references. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Karadzha Site (Ukraine)

The UFs provided contain a Russian word that roughly translates to “site of an ancient city,” leading the meeting to wonder whether Karadzha should be established as an extinct city instead of as an archaeological site (see SHM H 715).  Information from reference sources, translated into English if necessary, should be provided to support the cataloger’s decision. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Law and war

The work being cataloged should be cataloged using the existing heading War (International law). The proposal was not necessary.

Medicare—Claims administration

Claims administration and payments are not synonymous, so this proposal to add the UF Medicare—Payments to the existing heading was not approved.

Monument de la renaissance africaine (Dakar, Senegal)

Many reference sources describe this work by Pierre Goudiaby as a sculpture. The heading should be established in the name authority file as a work of art. The proposal was not approved.

Muslim cooking

LCSH already includes the heading Islamic cooking (sh2004002232).  A UF from Muslim cooking will be added to the existing heading, per the instructions in SHM H 1680. The proposal was not necessary.

Non-communicable diseases

The WHO Noncommunicable Diseases Fact Sheet states that non-communicable diseases are also known as chronic diseases, for which a heading already exists.  Non-communicable diseases will be added as a UF on Chronic diseases. The proposal was not approved.

Qizilbash (Turkic people)

The Joshua Project website indicates that there is a Turkic people group by this name that primarily lives in Afghanistan, and also in Iran. The meeting questions whether this is the same people group and asks that more research be done. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (London, England)

This proposal was not approved on List 2 of 2013.  The Summary of Decisions stated, “This heading does not represent a park in the traditional sense, since the park consists of several sporting venues, housing and amenities for Olympic athletes, etc.; housing developments, neighborhoods, a technology hub, and a university are all planned for the space.  The meeting believes that the nature of the area makes the heading better suited to the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.”

Stoney Creek (Ont.), Battle of, 1813

The classification number that was included in the subject proposal must be proposed, per CSM F 350.  Also, the form of heading should be revised to conform to the rules in SHM H 1285 sec. 1. The proposal may be resubmitted, along with a proposal for the classification number.

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve (Okla.)

This proposal was made to cancel the existing heading, on the grounds that the bill establishing the preserve was never voted into law.  Subject headings may exist for proposed structures, parks, vehicles, etc., if there are works written about them.  The Library of Congress database includes two works about this proposed preserve, and need the heading to be accurately cataloged. The proposal was not approved.

Telesphorus (Greek deity); Telesphorus (Greek diety) in literature

Effective in August 2013, individual named deities should be established in the name authority file (see SHM H 1635).  Headings for individual named deities that are established in the name authority file may be subdivided by the free-floating subdivision –In literature (see H 1095).  The proposal for the deity was not approved.  The proposal for the associated “in literature” heading was not necessary.

Hygieia (Greek deity) in literature

Effective in August 2013, individual named deities should be established in the name authority file (see SHM H 1635).  The meeting requests the cataloger to make a name authority record for the deity and then propose that the existing subject heading Hygieia (Greek deity) be cancelled. Headings for individual named deities that are established in the name authority file may be subdivided by the free-floating subdivision –In literature (see SHM H 1095).  The proposal was not necessary; a proposal to cancel the subject heading for the deity may be resubmitted.

Visual poetry, Austrian

The description of the work being cataloged that was provided in the proposal indicates that the work contains concrete poetry, not visual poetry.  The heading Concrete poetry, Austrian already exists. The proposal may be resubmitted with correction to the 670, if appropriate for the work being cataloged.

Women celebrities

The women profiled in the work being cataloged are mostly professional women such as bankers, lawyers, social activists, journalists, and so forth; they are not celebrities in the LCSH sense of the word. The work may be cataloged using the headings Successful people—Sri Lanka and Women—Sri Lanka. The proposal was not necessary.
