PSD policy specialist responsible for this list: L. Dechman

CLASSIFICATION

BL94.A-Z

The work being cataloged is about the history and principles of religions in regions and countries of Africa, for which BL2470.A-Z should be used instead.  The proposal was not approved.

BS325.L69

Lovari is a dialect of Romani, which is an Indo-Syrian language.  Indo-Syrian languages are from South Asia, not Africa.  A proposal for a cutter in BS315.A-Z may be resubmitted.

DA670.O87

The work being cataloged should be classified with East Sussex in DA670.E2. The rivers established in that class number are longer than a single region, county, etc. The proposal was not approved.

DD801.R66

A proposal may resubmitted for this region when a record for the region is created in the name authority file.

PN228.H97

The work being cataloged is about the use of hyperbole as a rhetorical device in various disciplines, not the use of hyperbole in literature.  A proposal for a number in P301.5.A-Z for hyperbole as a rhetorical device may be resubmitted.

PT1110.F33

The work being cataloged is a collection of short stories in the tradition of the Fall of the House of Usher.  The number proposed is for collections of multiple genres and forms.  The work should be classified in PT1340.F35.  The proposal was not approved.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

H 1149, Chemicals
$x Dissolution [May Subd Geog]
H 1158, Materials
$x Dissolution [May Subd Geog]

Other decisions:

Ananios of Kleitor (Fictitious character)

This is the supposed author of the work being cataloged, not the subject.  The proposal was not approved.

Badou (Fictitious character)

The evidence submitted with this proposal indicates that this is a character on a single television series, and brief research into the character has not produced evidence that the character appears in anything else.  The proposal may be resubmitted with evidence that the character has appeared in three or more works.

Battsengel Sum (Mongolia)

According to GEOnet, this is a second-order administrative division, which should be established in the name authority file.  The proposal was not approved.

Boronka-River (Hungary)

There are variants listed in GEOnet, and GEOnet was not cited.  The proposal may be resubmitted citing GEOnet and adding the variants found there.

Captive meerkats

The Summary of Decisions for WL1102 states, "Specific headings should generally not be established for individual species of captive animals."  The heading for the species may be postcoordinated with the existing heading Captive mammals.  The proposal was not approved.

Casa Jeroni Granell (Barcelona, Spain : Gran Via de lees Corts Catalanes)

The street name used in this qualifier must be established before it is used in a qualifier.  The proposal may be resubmitted along with a proposal for the name of the street.

Central Africans (Central African Republic)

There are several existing headings with the qualifier Central African, and some of them refer to the Central African Republic (e.g., Central African literature).  All headings with the qualifier Central African need to be examined, and revised if necessary.  The pattern to follow would be headings related to Congo (Brazzaville) (e.g., Congo (Brazzaville) literature).  This proposal may be resubmitted along with proposals, as appropriate, to change other existing headings that use the qualifier Central African.

Charters

This proposal seeks to make the subdivision --Charters free-floating under types of corporate bodies.  The current practice regarding Charters of particular types or levels of government has been to establish each use as a phrase heading, e.g., Municipal charters; County charters.  The meeting wishes to continue this practice with types of corporate bodies. Individual headings may be proposed for headings of the type [type of corporate body] charters, e.g., Bank charters. The proposal to make --Charters free-floating under types of corporate bodies was not approved.

Covered bonds--Law and legislation

The proposal was approved.

Dilutable soft drinks

The meeting changed this proposal to Drink concentrates, because evidence indicates that this term was more widely used in the industry.  Also, in LCSH the heading Soft drinks is used for carbonated drinks, and the drinks described in the proposal were not carbonated.  However, the UFs for Squashes and Cordials were omitted from the heading Drink concentrates, because it seems as if Squashes and/or Cordials describe particular types of Drink concentrates for which a separate proposal may be submitted.

George Washington-Robert Morris-Haym Salomon Monument (Chicago, Ill.)

This is a statue and as such should be established as an individual work of art in the name authority file.  The subject proposal was not approved.

Stone astronomical observatories

Headings for types of buildings made from specific materials are not ordinarily established. Headings should be postcoordinated to bring out the type of building and the material from which the building is constructed. Some older headings exist that do not follow the practice of postcoordination, e.g. Stone pagodas; Wooden chapels; Adobe mosques; etc., however, the meeting wishes to treat those headings as exceptional.  For the work being cataloged, the heading Stone buildings should be assigned along with Astronomical observatories.  The proposal was not approved.

Lado Enclave (Congo Free State)

Although it is called a region today, Lado Enclave was a jurisdiction (or, a quasi-jurisdiction) that had a capital, Lado.  Therefore, Lado Enclave should be established in the name authority file.   The proposal was not approved.

Marine ecosystems

The distinction between the concept of ecology and the concept of ecosystems is too fine to be useful for cataloging purposes. Current practice is to add a UF [type of habitat] ecosystems onto headings for the ecology of the habitat.  For example, the existing heading Marine riparian ecology has a UF Marine riparian ecosystems.  Therefore, a UF Marine ecosystems will be added to the existing heading Marine ecology.  The proposal was not approved.

Pells family

According to Dictionary of American family names, Pells is a variant of Pell, for which a heading already exists.  A UF Pells family will be added to the existing heading Pell family.  The proposal was not approved.

Portuguese language--Orthography and spelling--Problems, exercises, etc.

The proposal represents a free-floating combination.  SHM H 1154 permits the first subdivision, and SHM H 1095 permits the second. The proposal was not necessary.

Poverty

This proposal to add UFs for Poverty alleviation and Poverty reduction to the existing heading Poverty was not approved.  Instead, a proposal was submitted to establish Poverty--Prevention to which the UFs will be added.

Residential through-the-fence agreements; Through-the-fence agreements

The meeting feels that a single heading Through-the-fence agreements that covers all types of through-the-fence agreements would be preferable.  A scope note will be added to Through-the-fence agreements that will allow the heading to be used for all types (residential, general, commercial, etc.).  The proposal for Residential through-the-fence agreements was not approved.

Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region (Germany)

This region in Germany has been incorporated, therefore, it should be established in the name authority file.  The proposal was not approved.

Guyana--History; Guyana--History--1966-

The headings represented in these proposals are already established.  The proposals were unnecessary.

Same-sex marriage

The meeting does not equate the concept of Same-sex marriage with the concept of Marriage equality.  This proposal to add UFs for Marriage equality (Same-sex marriage) and Equality, Marriage (Same-sex marriage) is similar to a proposal which appeared on Tentative List 1121.  The Summary of Decisions from that meeting states, "A separate, appropriately researched, proposal for marriage equality may be proposed if desired.  Such a proposal should include a scope note clearly defining the intended meaning."  The proposal to add these UFs was not approved.

Timmy (Fictitious character)

This proposal represents a character on a television series and no evidence that the character appears elsewhere has been submitted.  The proposal may be resubmitted with evidence that the character has appeared in three or more works.

Operation Archery, 1941

The Summary of Decisions for WL0841 stated “Operations for particular battles are not given as UFs to the battle.  The operation may be separately established if desired.” A proposal for Operation Archery, 1941 may be submitted separately. This proposal to change the existing heading Vågsøy, Battle of, Norway, 1941 was not approved.
