March 10, 2010

PSD policy specialist responsible for this weekly list: J. Young

Classification

Changes were made as indicated on the approved list.

Subject Headings

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

H 1100, Classes of Persons

$x Gambling (May Subd Geog)

          Other decisions:

Artist files

The meeting decided that a heading “Artist files” would establish an undesirable precedent for further headings of the type [Class of persons] files, to refer to the files or records of that class of persons. The work cataloged can be described using the headings Indian art--[century]--History--Sources, Art archives, and if desired [personal name]--Archives. The proposal was not approved.

ASEAN; ASEAN--Singapore; ASEAN countries

According to SHM H 760 sec. 1.e.4, headings for regions based on international organizations are to be established only where no regional geographic heading that represents the countries exists. The heading Southeast Asia should be used to represent countries belonging to ASEAN, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The proposals were not approved.

Bamasaba (African people)

The African Studies Thesaurus Online lists Bamasaba as a variant name of the Gisu people. Bamasaba (African people) will be added as a UF to the existing heading Gisu (African people). The proposal was not approved.

Board game collections

The concept of collections of board games is covered by
the existing free-floating combination Board games--Private collections. The proposal was not approved.

Digital libraries

This proposal was made to make the subdivision --Digital
libraries free-floating under subjects. The meeting prefers that all
uses of --Digital libraries be individually proposed and established. The proposal was not approved.

Fiat CR-42 (Fighter plane)

The Fiat CR-42 was known as the Falco, and LCSH includes
the subject heading Falco (Fighter plane). Fiat CR-42 (Fighter plane)
will be added as a UF on the existing heading. The proposal was not
approved.

Mecklenburg-Strelitz, House of

This proposal was made to add a Russian-language UF to
the existing heading Mecklenburg-Strelitz, House of, based on the fact that some of the family moved to Russia. Foreign-language forms of name that are not pertinent to individual royal houses are not generally added as UFs. The proposal was not approved.

Pecos National Historical Park (N.M.); Pecos National Monument (N.M.)

The National Park Service web site states that the name of the Pecos National Monument was changed to Pecos National Historical Park when the Forked Lightning Ranch and the Glorieta Battlefield were acquired in 1990. The relationship between the two is one of earlier/later names, not related terms. The heading Pecos National Monument will be cancelled and become a UF for the heading Pecos National Historical Park (N.M.)

Clarification:

For buildings established as street addresses, a UF with the numeral of the street address spelled out should not be proposed, unless that form is actually found in the item being cataloged or in other sources that were consulted. SHM H 1334 sec. 4.a(4) will be revised to clarify this policy.
