January 6, 2010

Present from PSD: L. Dechman

Classification

M1250

The M schedule currently has a parallel structure of classification numbers for orchestra, string orchestra, and band separated by the major forms, such as symphonies, symphonic poems, suites, and variations. The meeting feels that introducing minor forms, such as fanfares, would be unnecessary. The proposal was not approved.

Subject Headings

Roman chamomile

This proposal, to change the BT on Roman chamomile to Anthemis, is supported only by a citation from Wikipedia. The information retrieved from Wikipedia is from a source dated 1887. Authoritative sources, such as ITIS and USDA Plants, which have been updated more recently, indicate that the genus of Roman chamomile is Chamaemelum, which is correct in the existing record. (The Subject Headings Manual H 1332, sec. 3, provides guidance on authoritative sources to be consulted.) The proposal to change this BT was not approved.

Cavasso Nuovo (Italy)

Cavasso Nuovo is a populated place according to BGN, and as such it should be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.

Jet fighters

The form of this heading should be Jet fighter planes. The BT should be Fighter planes, not Fighters. Additionally, and importantly, there are approximately 80 NTs that need to be edited, including all headings that use Jet fighter plane or Jet fighter planes as a qualifier. Also during the editing process, the qualifiers should be made singular. The proposal may be resubmitted along with proposals for appropriate changes to the NTs.

Volcanic eruptions

This proposal was submitted to add the UF Volcanic activity onto the record for Volcanic eruptions. This upward reference is not appropriate in this case, since volcanic activity takes many forms other than volcanic eruption. The proposal was not approved.
