Subject Headings

Emperors’ spouses; Presidents’ spouses; Prime ministers’ spouses

These proposals were made to change the BT on these existing headings from Spouses to Spouses of heads of state. The proposed change does not conform to the standard practice for assigning broader terms, in which the hierarchy consists of the term for a member of a class, such as Presidents’ spouses, with a broader term for the general class of persons, such as Spouses. (See SHM H 370.)  Also, considering the range of types of governments that the headings represent, not all of these headings represent heads of state. The proposals were not approved.
