Back to Summary of Decisions

November 12, 2009

Present from PSD: P. Weiss

Classification

Changes were made as indicated on the approved list.

Subject Headings

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

H 1147, Animals

$x Effect of global warming on (May Subd Geog)

Other decisions:

Cumberland Island National Seashore (Ga.); Guam National Seashore (Guam); Gulf Islands National Seashore (Fla. and Miss.)

Headings that designate a type of geographic feature, such as Seashore, are not used as broader terms for headings for national parks. The proposals to add Seashore--[place] as a broader terms for these headings were not approved.

Junior high school athletes--Growth; Junior high school students--Growth

The subdivision --Growth has been used only under general headings for age groups, such as Children--Growth and Teenagers--Growth. The meeting did not wish to extend the usage of this subdivision to more specific classes of persons such as those represented by these proposals. The proposals were not approved.

Kwini (Australian people)

It appears that Kwini and Wunambal may be two separate ethnic groups, each with its own language, and that it may be necessary to have two separate headings. The meeting requests the Coop partner library that submitted this proposal to resubmit it after doing additional research to confirm this.

Religious articles

Both Religious articles and Ceremonial objects are valid subject headings. Therefore this proposal to add the UF Ceremonial objects to the heading Religious articles was not approved.

Subject headings

Since the concept of structured or controlled vocabularies is broader than that of subject headings, the proposed UFs were not approved. The existing UF Controlled vocabularies will be removed from this heading, and the heading Controlled vocabularies will be established.

Ubuntu theology

Ubuntu has both philosophical and theological aspects. The meeting felt that the existing heading Ubuntu (Philosophy) is adequate to cover both aspects. The proposal was therefore not approved.

Voortrekker tapestry

A uniform title name authority record should be created for this tapestry, since it is an individual work of art. The proposal to establish it as a subject heading was not approved.
