December 19, 2007

Present from CPSO: P. Weiss, K. Griffiths, R. Goudreau, W. Robboy, J. Young, M. Hoban, R. Spalding

Classification

PL829.I67

Since the proposed number is for an author who was born after 1875, it is not necessary to establish it in the classification schedule (see the Subject Cataloging Manual: Classification, F 632, sec. 3.a.).

Subject Headings

Arkhangel Mikhail s deяniяmi (Icon)

Icons are treated as works of art and should be established in the name authority file. The proposal to establish this icon as a subject heading was not approved.

Camp songs

It is not clear from the 670 citations that were provided whether this heading is intended to refer to songs sung at recreational camps such as children's summer camps, or at military camps. The proposal may be resubmitted with citations that are pertinent to the intended meaning of the heading, and with a scope note.

Carbon offsetting

This concept is closely related to the existing heading Emissions trading. The proposal may be resubmitted with a scope note distinguishing it from that heading. A reciprocal scope note should be proposed to be added to the authority record for Emissions trading.

Comic books, strips, etc. and mass media; Graphic novels and mass media

In order to provide greater clarity as to the meaning of the heading, the proposal for Comic books, strips, etc. and mass media was changed to the form Comic books, strips, etc.--Influence on mass media. Since the heading Graphic novels is a narrower term under Comic books, strips, etc., the meeting did not feel that a separate heading was needed for the influence of graphic novels on mass media. The heading Comic books, strips, etc.--Influence on mass media would cover graphic novels as well as other types of comic books. The latter heading was therefore not approved.

Cyanobacteria--Effect of stress on--Molecular aspects

The proposed BT is prohibited by the Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings, H 370, sec. 1.a. (2), and was not approved. The existing BT will be retained.

Great Barrier Island (N.Z. : Island)

Per the decision reported on weekly list 07/44, the existing name heading Great Barrier Island (N.Z.) is valid for use as a subject heading. This proposal is not necessary and not approved.

Gruppe D (Group of artists)

Since this groups of artists appears to have functioned as a business firm in creating, publishing, promoting, and marketing their work, it should be established as a name heading (see the Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings, H 405, p. 10 (footnote)). The proposal to establish it as a subject heading is not approved.

Sinclair Park (Bremerton, Wash.)

As a planned community, Sinclair Park appears to be analogous to a city section and as such should be established as a name heading. The proposal to establish it as a subject was not approved.

Waste in government spending

The Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings, H 370, sec. 1.e.(3) provides rules for making hierarchical references for prepositional phrase headings. The proposed BT is not in accordance with those rules and was not approved.
