Subject Headings
Ecological carrying capacity
This heading was proposed as "Carrying capacity." The McGraw-Hill dictionary of scientific and technical terms provides separate definitions of this concept from the fields of ecology and electricity. It could also refer to an attribute of containers or transportation infrastructure. In situations in which a term or phrase is ambiguous or has more than one dictionary definition, it is necessary to modify it to indicate which meaning the heading is intended to represent in LCSH. Instruction sheet H 357 of the Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings covers the addition of parenthetical qualifiers to headings but also states that in many situations a parenthetical qualifier can be avoided by using an adjectival qualifier to create a phrase heading instead. In this case, because the GEMET thesaurus of the European Environmental Agency has the heading Ecological carrying capacity and that phrase may be found in thousands of online documents, the proposal was revised to that form with a UF reference Carrying capacity (Ecology).
