Present from CPSO: L. El-Hoshy, K. Griffiths, R. Goudreau, D. Thompson, T. Bishop

Classification

Changes were made as indicated on the approved list.

Subject Headings

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

H 1164, Organs of body

$x Hydatids (May Subd Geog)

Other decisions:

Indian business enterprises UF Reservation development

The meeting did not approve adding a UF Reservation development to the heading Indian business enterprises because the heading and proposed reference represent different concepts. A proposal to establish a new heading for "Economic development on Indian reservations" may be resubmitted.

Materials degradation

The meeting did not approve establishing a new heading in the form "Materials degradation" because the heading Materials--Deterioration appears to have been used for this topic. That heading also serves as BT reference on headings for specific types of deterioration/degradation, e.g., Materials--Biodeterioration; Materials--Erosion. If these topics are equivalent, a proposal to add a UF Materials--Degradation to the existing heading may be resubmitted.

Materials engineering

This proposal for "Materials engineering" is incomplete. According to instruction sheet H 370 sec. 1.d., in the Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings, "When establishing a new heading that is an intermediate term in a hierarchy, add the new heading as a BT to the authority records for all existing narrower headings, and delete any BTs that link the existing heading to headings broader than the newly-established intermediate term." An example of an existing heading that would need the new heading as a BT is Ceramic engineering, which currently has Engineering as its BT reference. Additionally, the bibliographic records to be updated with the new heading in the LC Online Catalog need to be identified as part of this proposal.

Surface engineering

It would be desirable to resubmit a proposal for "Surface engineering" along with the proposal for "Surface processing", which was discussed in the Summary of Decisions for Weekly List 4 (WL07-04), so that these proposals could be considered together.

Nature and architectural design; Nature and architecture

The meeting did not approve establishing two headings in the form "Nature and architectural design" and "Nature and architecture" because they would be too close and difficult to distinguish. According to H 310, several different types of headings are used to designate the relationships between two topics in LCSH. The construction [Topic A] and [Topic B] is used for the relationships between two very general topics discussed at a broad level and from the perspectives of both topics. Since part of the relationship between nature and architecture is already represented by the existing heading Architecture--Environmental aspects, and a UF Nature in architecture was included in the proposal for "Nature and architecture", the library is requested to consider resubmitting a proposal in the form "Nature in architecture" and assigning both headings to the work being cataloged.
