Classification

Changes were made as indicated on the approved list.

Subject Headings

Cataloging--Standards UF Cataloging--Rules

The meeting did not approve creating an authority record for Cataloging--Standards in order to trace a UF reference "Cataloging--Rules." While rules are a type of standard, not all standards are rules. Because both --Standards and --Rules are free-floating subdivisions in this context, the two headings Cataloging--Standards and Cataloging--Rules may be constructed and assigned as needed to works being cataloged without matching subject authority records. It appears that the heading Cataloging--Standards is appropriate to be assigned to the cited work.

Discrimination in higher education; Discrimination in medical education

Proposals to add BT references to these existing headings were not approved because the reference structures of the headings match the current policy for making references on headings formulated with prepositional phrases. According to instruction sheet H 370 sec. 1.e.(3)(a), a BT reference is made from the heading that corresponds to the term(s) following the preposition.

Pacifism in literature

The meeting did not approve adding the UF references "Anti-war literature (Fiction)" and "Pacifist literature (Fiction)" to Pacifism in literature because these proposed references are structured as if they were literary form headings. Pacifism in literature is intended to be used for discussions of the topic of pacifism as a theme in literature. If a literary form heading is desired for anti-war novels or stories, a proposal to establish a heading analogous to the existing heading Anti-war poetry could be resubmitted.

Steamboat lines CANCEL Steamship lines

These proposals to cancel the headings Steamboat lines and Steamboat lines--Flags, insignia, etc. and replace them with "Steamship lines" and "Steamship lines--Flags, insignia, etc." were withdrawn from the list. The proposals are incomplete because there are other subdivisions established under Steamboat lines as well as BT/NT references that would also need to be revised to effect these changes. However, the meeting feels that changes to headings in this area should not be undertaken until a thorough review of the existing heading Steamboats, which has a UF Steamships, and related headings is carried out at LC.

Synovial joints

This proposal to establish a heading for "Synovial joints" was not approved. The meeting considers it impractical to establish a specific heading separate from the existing heading Joints because most of the joints in the body are synovial, or freely movable, and most of the general literature on joints focuses on them. Instead, UF references and a scope note will be added to Joints.
