Back to Summary of Decisions

March 1, 2006

Present from CPSO: P. Weiss, B. Bellinger, R. Goudreau

Classification

Table KL-KWX2 982.C67

There is no precedent in the law schedules for combining computer crimes, commercial crimes, and white collar crimes into a single caption. The proposal was therefore revised to establish a new number solely for computer crimes.

QA20.M36

This topic is already established at QA19.M34. The proposal was not approved.

Subject Headings

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

H 1095

$x Deterioration ADD: (May Subd Geog)

H 1158, Materials

$x Deterioration ADD: (May Subd Geog)

Other decisions:

Bronze Age Way Site (London, England)

No authority was cited to show that the area near the Bronze Age Way is an identifiable archaeological site or that it is referred to by this name. It is suggested that the heading [place]--Antiquities be assigned to the item being cataloged. The proposal was not approved.

Pests--Integrated control

Foreign language references to topical headings are made only if the foreign terms are widely used in English (see H 373, sec. 7). That does not appear to be the case with this term. The proposal was therefore not approved.

Roads--Maintenance and repair

Because of an error that was made when this proposal record was created, it is not clear whether the heading Roads--Deterioration was intended as a broader term or as a related term for the heading Roads--Maintenance and repair. It is not appropriate as a broader term, and is not needed as a related term since both headings begin with the same word. The reference was therefore not approved.

State, The--Religious aspects; State, The--Religious aspects--Buddhism, [Christianity, etc.]

These topics are covered by the existing heading Religion and state and by headings of the type Buddhism and state, Church and state, Judaism and state, etc. The proposals were therefore not approved. A reference has been added from State, The--Religious aspects to the heading Religion and state.

Transportation agencies

It is not standard practice in LCSH to use "and" headings of the type Transportation and state as broader terms for other topical headings. The proposal was not approved. The heading Transportation agencies already has the appropriate broader term.

Wetlands--Geographical distribution

The subdivision --Geographical distribution is used only under entities that are not in fixed locations, such as plants and animals. It is not used under immovable geographic features. The heading Wetlands--Oregon seems sufficiently specific for the item being cataloged. The notion of location is inherent in the heading itself. The proposal was not approved.
