Coding subject headings for geographic subdivision

An increasing number of subject authority proposal records are being submitted with incorrect coding for geographic subdivision in field 008/06, the most common error being confusion in the use of the code for "Not subdivided geographically" vs. the use of the "fill" character indicating "No attempt to code." H 364, sec. 2, provides a finite list of the types of headings that are to be explicitly coded as "Not subdivided geographically." Only headings falling into one of the categories listed there should be so coded. All other subject headings should be coded either "Subdivided geographically--indirect" or "No attempt to code," as appropriate. Catalogers are asked to review the provisions of H 364 and to follow those rules when selecting a code for field 008/06.
