Back to Summary of Decisions

November 9, 2005

Present from CPSO: P. Weiss, N. Jones, R. Goudreau

Classification

Changes were made as indicated on the approved list.

Subject Headings

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

H 1158, Materials

$x Fires and fire prevention (May Subd Geog)

Other decisions:

Angels and civilization

This proposed heading seems very vague and general, and may be broader than is necessary for the work being cataloged. It appears that more specific headings might be appropriate for the work, such as Angels in art (an existing heading) and/or Angels in popular culture (a heading that would have to be established). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Cala de Sant Vicen Site (Spain)

"Cala de Sant Vicen" appears to be the name of a cove or inlet in Mallorca rather than the name of a site or of the nearby caves. The BGN-approved form of the name as shown on GEOnet is "San Vicente, Cala de," with "Sant Vicen, La Cala de" given as a variant form. A proposal may be resubmitted to establish this geographic feature. It will be necessary to make adjustments to the headings assigned to the work being cataloged.

Chacarera (Dance); Chacareras (Music)

The proposed scope notes were deleted from these headings because the qualifiers (Dance) and (Music) make the headings self-explanatory.

Electric violoncello; Electric violoncello with orchestra

The proposal for Electric violoncello should be resubmitted together with a proposal to establish the required companion heading Electric violoncello music (see H 1918, sec. 1.a.) The inverted UFs Violoncello, Electric and Violoncello, Electronic are not needed because of the presence of the BT Violoncello (see H 373, sec. 2). The proposal to establish Electric violoncello with orchestra is not necessary. The existence of the headings Electric violoncello and Electric violoncello music will authorize the construction of Electric violoncello with orchestra without an authority record (see H 250, sec. 2.)

Sukhayrãt Coup Attempt, Sukhayrãt Morocco, 1971

The heading was changed to the form more commonly found in English usage, Skhirat Coup Attempt, Sukhayrãt, Morocco, 1971. Although systematic Romanized forms should be used in geographic qualifiers in event headings, those forms need not be used in the part of the heading that expresses the name of the event. For that portion of the heading, the most commonly found English form should be used.

Yawarawarga (Australian peoples)

The plural form "peoples" is not used in qualifiers for headings in LCSH. The heading was therefore changed to Yawarawarga (Australian people).
