New Book on Montevideo Opera House To Be Featured at Books & Beyond Talk on Dec. 15

Susana Salgado will discuss her new book, "The Teatro Solis: 150 Years of Opera, Concert and Ballet in Montevideo" (Wesleyan University Press, 2003), at the Library of Congress at noon on Monday, Dec. 15, in the Pickford Theater, third floor, Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E., in Washington, D.C.

Salgado’s presentation is part of the Center for the Book’s "Books & Beyond" author series, which highlights new books of particular relevance to the collections or programs of the Library of Congress. It is co-sponsored with the Hispanic Division and the Music Division.

The Teatro Solis in Montevideo, Uruguay–established in 1856 and still operating–is one of the oldest theaters in the Americas. This first comprehensive history of the theater is enriched by anecdotes, reviews, and numerous illustrations, including eight color plates. Its value as a reference work is enhanced by a complete chronology of performances, which is indexed by performer and work.

An American musicologist who was born in Montevideo, Susana Salgado is a consultant to the Music Division in the Library of Congress. Prior to leaving Uruguay, she was research professor and chair of Uruguayan Music at the University of Uruguay in Montevideo. She also organized and directed the preservation and cataloging of the scores in the musical archives of the Teatro Solis. Author of several books, she has contributed to many scholarly publications, including five Grove dictionaries: "Opera," "Music 1980," "Music 2001," "Women Composers" and "American Composers."

The Center for the Book, established in 1977 as a public-private partnership, uses the resources and prestige of the Library of Congress to stimulate public interest in books, reading, literacy and libraries. For information about its projects and publications and the activities of its affiliates in 50 states and the District of Columbia, consult its Web site at www.loc.gov/cfbook.
