Italian Ambassador to the United States Ferdinando Salleo To Lecture at Library of Congress

Ferdinando Salleo, the Italian Ambassador to the United States, will lecture on The Italian-American Relationship in the Context of a Changing Europe during a lecture at the Library of Congress. The lecture, to be delivered Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mumford Room, sixth floor of the James Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E., will be followed by a reception in the nearby Mumford Room. The event is free and open to the public; tickets are not required.

Mr. Salleo was born in 1936 in Messina, Sicily. He received a degree in law from the University of Rome in 1959. In 1960 he joined the Foreign Service and was assigned to the Political Directorate before moving to the Italian Embassy in Paris in 1963. He then returned to Rome, in the Foreign Ministers Cabinet and the Presidents Diplomatic Office. In 1966-69 he was posted to New York City as Deputy Consul General of Italy. The Ambassadors next assignment, in 1969-72, was in Prague as Counselor at the Italian Embassy.

He then moved to Washington to work at the Embassy as Counselor in 1972- 74. He returned to Rome, again at the Political Directorate of the Foreign Ministry, as head of the NATO Department until 1977, when he was assigned as Minister to the Embassy in Bonn. Early in 1981 he assumed the post of Deputy Director General of Development Cooperation, and later, Director General, until 1986, when he was appointed Ambassador of the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. In 1988 he returned to the Foreign Ministry as Director General of Economic Affairs and in 1989 was appointed Ambassador to the Soviet Union.

The tour included the disintegration of the nation and serving as Ambassador to Russia and several successor states until 1993. That year he was appointed Director General of Political Affairs and became Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry in 1994. In November 1995 he became Ambassador to the United States. Ambassador Salleo has been a visiting professor at the University of Florence and a professor at Rome University.
