The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress and Columbia University's Rare Book and Manuscript Library will sponsor a symposium on Oct. 3-5, 1996, at Columbia University on the topic of publishing archives. Subjects to be discussed include the effect of the changing marketplace and new technologies on the collection, retention, and use of publishing archives; intellectual property issues; understanding and documenting the publishing process; and publishing archives as primary sources. There also will be a presentation on a survey of 20th century American publishers' archives that is being undertaken by the Scholarly Publishing Program at Arizona State University on behalf of the Book Industry Study Group.

The symposium, which begins with a dinner on Thursday night, Oct. 3 and concludes with a workshop on Saturday morning, Oct. 5, is open to the public. Space, however, is limited. There will be a $40 charge for the dinner on Oct. 3. To reserve a place and for further information, write Publishing Archives Symposium, Center for the Book, Library of Congress, Washington, DC 20540-4920.
