Library of Congress Open During Government Shutdown

All facilities and services of the Library of Congress will remain open during the current government shutdown. The Library's 1996 budget was signed into law by the President on November 19 as part of the Legislative Branch Appropriations Bill.

Among the attractions open to public is an exhibition of treasures from the French national library entitled "Creating French Culture" which is open through December 31. More than 200 rare books, manuscripts, maps, and other precious objects are on display in the elaborately restored Thomas Jefferson Building. Vistors may also view the recently restored Great Hall of the Library of Congress. The Great Hall has been called "one of the most magnificant interior spaces in the United States."

Hours for "Creating French Culture" are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 on Sundays. Except for Christmas Day, the exhibition will be open through December 31. For more information, please call (202) 707-5000.
