Rhino Records and the Library of Congress Release Presidential Recordings

Rhino Entertainment, in collaboration with the Library of Congress, has released recordings of 23 key speeches delivered by every President of the 20th century, from Teddy Roosevelt to Bill Clinton. Most of the speeches have never been published previously. Presidents Gerald R. Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton each identified two speeches from their administration from which the Library of Congress selected one to be included in the boxed set of six CDs/cassettes entitled "The Library of Congress Presents: Historic Presidential Speeches (1908-1993)."

Most of the speeches on the set were chosen by the Library of Congress. However, when the President or his immediate family could be contacted, the President, someone from his family, or staff made the selection.

President Kennedy's speech was chosen by his former speechwriter Theodore Sorensen, with the concurrence of Jacqueline Onassis. Mrs. Lady Bird Johnson selected President Johnson's 1964 commencement address at the University of Michigan where he laid out his plans for "the Great Society." President Nixon's "Silent Majority" speech was chosen on the basis of the fondness he expressed for it in his autobiography. Perhaps the most unusual selection on the set was made by President Carter. He selected his 1979 "Crisis of Energy" speech, popularly known as the "Malaise Speech" for which he was widely criticized.

The speeches were digitally remastered from original disc or broadcast sources in the Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. The set is issued on compact discs or audiocassettes and includes a fifty-six page illustrated brochure with an introduction by Librarian of Congress James H. Billington, a political timeline, and interpretive and historical essays by the producers and Dr. Kathleen Hall Jamieson, presidential scholar and dean of the Annenberg School of Communications at the University of Pennsylvania. The suggested list price is $79.98 CDs/$59.98 cassettes. It is available at audio retail outlets and selected bookstores or by mail from Rhino Mail Order at (800) 432-0020.
