New Library of Congress Bibliography Offers Guide to Centennial Feud

The Library of Congress has just published a new bibliography, The Battle of the Centuries: A List of References. Compiled by Ruth S. Freitag, a staff member of the Science and Technology Division, it cites more than 200 pamphlets and articles in periodicals and newspapers dealing with the end of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first.

Although arithmetic makes it clear that the new century will begin January 1, 2001, some celebrations already are being planned for a year earlier. The bibliography cites expressions of differing views on turning the century going back to the end of the seventeenth century.

Battle of the Centuries: A List of References has a cover illustration showing Father Time pondering the dividing point between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The 57-page, paperback bibliography is available for $2.75 from the Superintendent of Documents, P.O. Box 371954, Pittsburgh, PA 15250- 7954. Cite Stock Number 030-001-00153-9.
