New Book Describes Inscriptions and Quotations in the Jefferson, Adams and Buildings

On These Walls: Inscriptions and Quotations in the Buildings of the Library of Congress has just been published by the Library. The author is John Y. Cole, director of the Center for the Book. Aimed primarily at visitors, On These Walls is the first book to list the inscriptions and quotations in all three Library buildings; it also includes brief descriptions of major paintings and works of sculpture, along with an abbreviated history of each building.

Published with support from the Madison Council, the Library's private-sector advisory body, the book contains six color and 27 black-and-white photographs and a detailed "index and guide to names." It is a companion to Jefferson's Legacy: A Brief History of the Library of Congress (1993), which also was partially funded by the Madison Council.

A 106-page book, On These Walls may be purchased at the Library of Congress Sales Shop and by mail for $8.50. If ordering by mail, add $3.50 for postage and handling. Orders should be sent to the LC Sales Shop, Washington, DC 20540-5240. Credit card orders may be placed by phone at (202) 707-0204.
