Library of Congress and Xerox Foundation Announce Major Grant for Exhibition and National Celebration in 1997
WHAT: Announcement of a major grant to the Library of Congress from the Xerox Foundation for a national celebration and major exhibition, "Treasures of the Library of Congress," to mark the 100th anniversary and official opening in 1997 of the fully restored Thomas Jefferson Building.
WHEN: 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 4
WHERE: Northwest Gallery of Great Hall Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First Street, S. E. The West Front doors at the top of the stairs will be open to the press.
WHO: Dr. James H. Billington, Librarian of Congress and Paul A. Allaire, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Xerox Corporation, and President of The Xerox Foundation
Following brief remarks by Dr. Billington and Mr. Allaire, a selection of treasures from the Library will be on view for the press. These rare, original items will range from the 1776 Dunlap Broadside of the Declaration of Independence to one of the recently-recovered Walt Whitman notebooks. Photographs and video footage may be taken of the objects using ambient light. Black and white photographs will also be available of some of the objects.
