Librarian of Congress To Announce National Film Registry Selections for 1994

Librarian of Congress James H. Billington will announce his annual selections of 25 films to the National Film Registry at a press conference in New York City at the Titus Theater 2 of The Museum of Modern Art, 11 West 53rd St. at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, November 14.

The list of selected films and the Librarian's remarks will be released simultaneously in Washington by the Library of Congress Public Affairs Office, Room LM105, James Madison Memorial Building.

This is the first year since the Film Registry was established by law in 1988 that the announcement of the 25 films selected for preservation at the Library of Congress has been made outside of Washington. The announcement coincides with the National Film Preservation Board meeting, held this year at MOMA. The Board advises the Librarian of Congress on the selection of films as well as on national film preservation policy.

Under the terms of the National Film Preservation Act, each year the Librarian of Congress names 25 films to the National Film Registry, with each list designed to reflect the full range and diversity of the American film heritage. The films are chosen because they are judged to be "culturally, historically, or aesthetically" significant. To date, 125 films have been placed on the registry.
