The Gulf Coast of the United States stretches more than 1,600 miles from Texas to the tip of the Florida peninsula and is bounded by the Gulf of Mexico, which covers more than 700,000 square miles in Southeast North America.
On September 2, 2010 (approximately 102 miles offshore, south of Vermillion Bay, Louisiana), the Vermillion Block Platform 380 oil platform was engulfed in flames. Several members of the platform crew were rescued from the Gulf waters. This platform is located west southwest of the Deepwater Horizon platform that exploded on April 2010.
