Located today in southern Serbia, Kosovo became an autonomous region in the Yugoslavian province of Serbia after World War II. With the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, Kosovo began demanding greater autonomy from Serbia. These demands have resulted in the imposition of direct rule by Serbia, the rescinding of its autonomous status, and the current conflict.
