James Reston discusses his newest book "Defenders of the Faith" which focuses on Charles V, Suleyman the Magnificient, and the Battle for Europe, 1520-1536.
Speaker Biography: James Reston was raised in Washington, D.C. and attended the University of North Carolina where he earned his B.A. in philosophy. At UNC he was an All South soccer player and spent his junior year studying at Oxford University. He served as an assistant to U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Steward Udall from 1964-65. Reston served in the Army from 1965-68 and was a lecturer in creative writing at UNC from 1971-81. He has been a fellow at the American Academy in Rome, a scholar in residence at the Library of Congress and currently senior scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C. He is the author of 14 books, three plays, and numerous articles. His works of fiction and nonfiction cover historical and political topics. He was awarded the Prix Italia and the Dupont-Columbia Award for his 1983 radio documentary "Father Cares: The Last of Jonestown." His last four historical works have been translated into more than ten languages. In recent years he has lectured widely in the United States and overseas concerning the crusades and their relevance to modern issues.
