When Ernest L. Crandall photographed this image, Theodore Roosevelt was President of 87 million Americans, Union (railway) Station was being completed a few blocks away and Oklahoma was poised to become the 46th state. George Washington laid the cornerstone for the building in September 1793 and Congress met there for the first time in November 1800. About 14 years later, toward the end of the War of 1818, British troops set fire to the building and only a rainstorm prevented its total destruction.
