U.S. Newspaper Collections at the Library of Congress

19th and 20th Century Original Print Bound Volumes

The pages arranged by state, linked at left, contain lists of the U.S. newspapers held in original print bound volume format that are available in the Newspaper & Current Periodical Reading Room. The bound volume materials are held in off-site storage and must be requested 3-5 business days in advance of a visit to the reading room. Newspapers in original format are not available for Interlibrary Loan and must be viewed on-site. For more information about requesting materials please see this page on Using the Collections.

The lists are based on an inventory that was conducted in the summer of 1998 and are meant to be a good starting point for finding out what is available by place and time period. Arranged alphabetically by state and then by city, the lists indicate the bound volume control number, total volume count, and summary date holdings for each title (title may vary from what is listed). The inventory does not provide detailed holdings; dates listed may have unspecified missing issues. Also, "misc" refers to miscellaneous issues that have been collected separately for each state; these portfolios may include single issues that supplement the holdings of cities listed. The portfolios are stored on-site and may be requested via paper call slip in the Newspaper & Current Periodical Reading Room.

Increasingly specific holdings information is provided in the title record in the Library of Congress Online Catalog. Where available, the online holdings substitute for holdings indicated in the lists, linked in the menu at left. For detailed information, please contact reference staff.

Please note that when microfilm is available for issues also held in bound format, the microfilm will be served to researchers.
