Published Guides

Though currently out of print, these hardbound publications can be found in large public and university libraries.

EARLY MOTION PICTURES: THE PAPER PRINT COLLECTION IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, by Kemp Niver (Washington, DC: Library of Congress, 1985). This catalog describes 3,000 films made between 1894 and 1915. Films listed are available for study on Library premises. Copies, on any format, may be purchased.

THE GEORGE KLEINE COLLECTION OF EARLY MOTION PICTURES IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS: A CATALOG (Washington, DC: Library of Congress, 1980). This catalog describes 456 motion pictures produced between 1898 and 1926. Films listed in this catalog are available for study on Library premises. Copies, on any format, may be purchased.

THE THEODORE ROOSEVELT ASSOCIATION FILM COLLECTION: A CATALOG (Washington, DC: Library of Congress, 1986). This catalog describes 318 films relating to the life and career of Theodore Roosevelt. These films may be viewed on Library premises. Copies, on any format, may be purchased.

THREE DECADES OF TELEVISION: A CATALOG OF TELEVISION PROGRAMS ACQUIRED BY THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS 1949-1979, compiled by Sarah Rouse and Katharine Loughney. (Washington, DC: Library of Congress, 1989). This catalog cites over 14,000 broadcasts acquired between 1949-1979. Programs include series, serials, telefeatures, specials and documentaries; daytime and prime-time programs; local, network, DuMont, and syndicated broadcasts; and educational material. These programs may be viewed on Library premises. Copies of some may be purchased.


In-house Finding Aids

Though not actually published, most of these finding aids have been printed and are available to researchers in the Moving Image Research Center. The year the finding aid was produced and of the last update is provided, so films acquired since that date will not be included. Finding aids available online are indicated by links.

AMERICAN INDIANS IN SILENT FILM: MOTION PICTURES IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, complied by Karen C. Lund; 1992, updated in 1995. This is an annotated list of silent and non-fiction films with substantial American Indian content that are in the Library's collections. The films may be viewed at the Library.

AMERICAN INDIANS ON FILM AND VIDEO: DOCUMENTARIES IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, compiled by Jennifer Brathovde; 1992. This is an annotated list of selected American Indian-related documentaries available for study in the Library of Congress.

BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL ON FILM AND TELEVISION. compiled by Josie Walters-Johnston; 2019. A guide to moving image materials on the subject of baseball and softball in the collections of the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center of the Library of Congress. This guide does not attempt to list every reference to baseball and softball in the Library's moving image collection.

BLACK FILMS IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, compiled by Cooper Graham; 1987. A list that, for the most part, consists of films with all black casts which were intended primarily for African American audiences. This guide was compiled in 1987 and is not a complete listing of the Library's holdings. Films listed in the guide may be viewed at the Library when reference prints or viewing copies exist.

An annotated list of the German newsreel series from 1940-1945. These newsreels may be viewed on Library premises. DISCOVERY AND EXPLORATION FILMS IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, compiled by Cooper Graham; 1989?. An annotated list of films concerning exploration. The films may be viewed at the Library.

FILMS ON THE SENATE AND HOUSE IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, compiled by Cooper Graham; 1988. An annotated list of fiction, documentary films and television that deal substantially with the House of Representatives or the Senate. This list was assembled in 1988 and though no longer complete, it is still useful.

FOX TONENDE WOCHENSCHAU AT THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, compiled by Cooper Graham; 1995. An annotated list of an incomplete run of the German newsreel series from 1930 to 1933. These newsreels may be studied on Library premises. Copies may be obtained from Transit Film-Gesellschaft MBH, distribution agent for the Bundesarchiv in Germany.

FRENCH SILENT FILMS IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COLLECTION, compiled by Ann Sullivan; 1988. A list of silent French films from 1896 to 1917.

INVENTORY TO ARCHIVAL BOXES, compiled by Brian Taves. An inventory of film and television related paper and manuscript materials held by the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center of the Library of Congress.

JAZZ ON FILM AND VIDEO IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, compiled by Rebecca D. Clear; 1993. An annotated guide to jazz performances on film an video.

THE KARR (LAWRENCE F.) COLLECTION OF PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS AT THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, compiled by Karen C. Lund; 1995. This guide lists 75 public service announcements that were broadcast around the East Coast area of the United States. These may be viewed at the Library.

LABOR-RELATED FILMS IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COLLECTION, compiled by Adele Heagney; 1990. An annotated listing of labor history documentaries available for study in the Library.

MARTIN LUTHER KING ON FILM AND VIDEO: DOCUMENTARIES IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, compiled by Ra'chel Singletary; 1995. An annotated list of films and television broadcasts about Martin Luther King.

THE ROBERT R. GITT COLLECTION OF TELEVISION COMMERCIALS AT THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, compiled by Karen C. Lund; 1995. This guide lists 362 commercials made during the early 1970s. The collection also contains 7 public service announcements from the American Dairy Association.

RUSSIAN FILMS IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, by Cooper Graham; 1988, under revision in 1996. A list of silent and sound features, documentaries and shorts produced in Russia.

A SELECTED LIST OF INDIAN FILMS AND VIDEOS IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, compiled by Cooper Graham; 1992. A listing of 90 feature films and 100 short films made by Indian filmmakers. These films were acquired through the efforts of the New Delhi Office of the Overseas Operations Division of the Library.

SHAKESPEARE ON FILM IN THE National Audio-Visual Conservation Center AT THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, compiled by Zoran Sinobad 2012. A list of Shakespeare films and television broadcasts in the Library's collections.

SILENT ANIMATED FILMS IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, compiled by Joy A. McIntire; 1995. An annotated list of 250 silent animation films.

TELEVISION COMMERCIALS IN THE LAWRENCE F. KARR COLLECTION IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, compiled by Rebecca F. Bachman with the assistance of Catherine Garland and Stephen Kharfen; 1995. This collection comprises 1,928 commercials produced during the 1960s and early 1970s. Public service announcements are not included in this finding aid, but a guide to those is in preparation. The commercial products advertised include items such as food, automobiles, cigarettes, various services and entertainment products. Companies represented are Colgate-Palmolive, Campbell's, Chevrolet, General Foods, American Oil Company and others. These commercials were broadcast on WJAR-TV, Channel 10, affiliate in the Providence, Rhode Island area.

UFA-TON-WOCHE AT THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, compiled by Cooper Graham and Regina Butterwegge; 1995. An annotated list of an incomplete run of the German Newsreel series from 1933 to 1940. THE UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY COLLECTION OF SOVIET AND RUSSIAN TELEVISION IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, compiled by Karen R. Ploucquet; 1992. This guide represents primarily Russian language video tapes recorded between December 1988 and February 1991. The tapes feature Soviet programming and provide a record of the glasnost era.

VIETNAM ON FILM AND TELEVISION: DOCUMENTARIES IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, compiled by Victoria E. Johnson; 1989. An annotated list of film and television documentaries about the Vietnam War and related subjects.

WEST AFRICAN CINEMA AT THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, compiled by Cooper Graham; 1995. An annotated list of films made by West African filmmakers or related to West African issues and culture.

WORLD WAR I ON FILM AND TELEVISION IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, being compiled by Karen C. Lund. This annotated list of documentary and fiction films about World War I is still a work- in-progress -- it is not a complete listing of World War I films in the Library's collections.
