The Federal Research Division (FRD) supported the U.S.
Centennial of Flight Commission (COFC) from FY 2000 to FY 2004, in preparation
for the 100th anniversary of powered flight on December 17, 2003.
Updating an earlier work by the Library of Congress (LC) –
Wilbur & Orville Wright: A Bibliography, compiled
by Arthur G. Renstrom and commemorating the hundredth anniversary
of the birth of Wilbur Wright (Washington: Library of Congress,
1968) – FRD provided the COFC with an extensive bibliographic
database on the Wright Brothers. The database provided the public,
educators and students alike with a wealth of information about
the written resources on the Wright Brothers available at and through
In addition, FRD prepared for the COFC an electronic version (PDF)
of Arthur G. Renstrom’s Wilbur & Orville Wright:
Pictorial Materials; a documentary guide. This selective
guide to Wright brothers pictorial materials appearing in books,
periodicals and other pertinent sources was enhanced by FRD and
now includes links to the Library of Congress collection of the
Wright Brothers glass plate negatives, located on the LC web site.
