Address/Telephone Directories from Cyprus
at the Library of Congress

Cover of 1988 phone book from Cyprus

The Library of Congress holds about 50 Cypriot telephone directories from 1943 through 1991. While ordinarily considered mundane, throw-away items, telephone books are valued by genealogists, historians, lawyers, and other researchers because few libraries save them, and they therefore become, in effect, rare items. In addition, since the telephone books provide addresses as well as telephone numbers for individuals and organizations, they are a valuable tool for verifying the existence of individuals and identifying where they lived at particular times, or where organizations were located.

Telephone directories gradually replaced the older city directories from the pre-telephone era which often provided more extensive information on individuals, such as occupation and spouse's name. Telephone directories slowly came into their own in the late 1920s and 1930s as they were mass-produced and widely distributed – and ordinarily discarded when a new edition came out. The 1919 invention of the rotary telephone and its gradual spread over the next several decades, first through urban areas and then rural ones, allowed subscribers to direct-dial calls, rather than having to go through an operator to place one.

This list of Cypriot telephone directories is organized as follows. First are listed 40 country-wide directories in chronological order. Then a few directories for two cities and their surrounding regions are listed, using the generally-accepted English form of names, Limassol [Lemesos] and Nicosia [Leukosia] are given in alphabetical order and sub-arranged in chronological order. The exact title of each non-English directory is provided in transliteration, along with the type of phone book (individuals, organizations, or both), and notes with data on the publisher and additional information gathered from the books and their contents, including the language(s) the directory is in - Greek, English, or Turkish.

The U.S. government does not recognize the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus, established in 1974. This list does not contain directories from North Cyprus, although some of the country-wide directories issued in the Republic of Cyprus after 1974 do include listings, almost exclusively of Greek names, of cities and towns in North Cyprus such as Famagusta (Ammochostos; Gazi Magusa) and Cyrenia (Kerynia; Girne).

None of these telephone directories are cataloged, and therefore are not represented in the Library of Congress' online catalog. Items needed for research may be requested by submitting call slips giving the name of the country, name of city, and date of publication for each directory needed.

This list was compiled de visu by Katharine Liptak in July 2017, supervised by Harold Leich. For further information about these telephone directories or the Library's Greek Cypriot collections in general, please contact:
