Treatment Considerations for a Newly-Discovered Drawing by Martín Ramírez
July 14, 2015
View video (55 minutes)
About the Lecture:
In 2009, an archivist at the Library of Congress working to catalog a gift collection discovered a rolled up, brittle drawing on the blank sides of patched-together pieces of mail that, after much research, was determined to be one of the earliest drawings by the Mexican-born, self-taught artist, Martín Ramírez (1895-1963). Following much-needed conservation, the drawing was officially unveiled in the Library's two-day conference, A Celebration of Mexico in December 2013 and featured, through early 2014, in a special rotation in the Library's ongoing exhibit, Exploring the Early Americas.
This lecture recounts the challenges, discoveries, and further questions stemming from the drawing's conservation treatment by Susan Peckham, a Senior Paper Conservator in the Library's Conservation Division.
