The Preservation Directorate piloted new collaborative programs to continually improve workflow and cost efficiencies in library binding, selection for mass deacification, digital scanning, and microfilming; migrated from analog to fully digital conservation treatment documentation; and conducted a technical assessment of a 1784 map in preparation for the design of an anoxic display encasement.

In FY10 the Preservation Directorate opened three renovated science laboratories; completely redesigned the Directorate website; collaborated on several initiatives to address emergency preparedness for libraries; developed a new graduate level Library Science and Archives track course with the University of Maryland; and hosted a dozen interns and volunteers.

The Directorate's 40th year of service renewed efforts in science and research with upgrades to the 25 year old laboratories and additional scientists; continuation of the invitational Preservation Research and Education Symposia (PRES) on Future Directions in Document Preservation, covering Emergency Mitigation, Preservation Education, and Preservation Research.

Directorate as the Regional Center for North America for the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) Preservation and Conservation (PAC) Focal Point, initiated the formation of an IFLA PAC North American Network to form a network of local regional centers that can address library preservation issues on a national level.

For President Reagan’s State Funeral, the Directorate prepared a dozen Signature Books for Congress and the visiting public to sign in commemoration; launched a Multi-Cultural Fellowship Program; Two new automatic computer systems were purchased that design, measure and cut custom mats and boxes.
