The Preservation Directorate of the Library of Congress, in its role as the Regional Center for Preservation and Conservation for IFLA in North America, periodically hosts invitational events focusing on future directions in preservation.

Safety Net IV: FLICC Disaster Preparedness National Update

This program, held at the Library of Congress and sponsored through FLICC, will feature updates on national and international initiatives on disaster preparedness in cultural institutions. Jane Long, Heritage Preservation; Angela Gladwel, FEMA; and Nancy Gwinn, the ALA representative for the U.S. Committee on the Blue Shield will speak.

Summit on Research/ Technology Transfer (SORTT) Approximately two dozen scientists from federal and other public laboratories discussed advances in forensic, analytical, and polymer science research; industrial, earth resource, and aerospace technology; and cultural heritage preservation, focusing on micro, non-destructive, and lifetime predictive testing (utilizing advanced spectral imaging, global positioning, navigation and timing systems, and open source software for data mining and reference collections) within collaborative frameworks.
June 24, 2009 Safety Net III: Getting Your Feet Wet This workshop, sponsored through FLICC, featured lectures and demonstrations of fundamental terms and principles, including: Emergencies and Disasters, Preparedness, Response, Recovery, Risk Assessment, Site Safety.
July 24-25, 2008 Summit of Research Scientists in Preservation (SORS)

Approximately 30 senior conservation scientists were convened at LC to share the objectives of scientific research in which they are currently engaged and to identify essential lines of research needed to meet today’s preservation challenges.

Symposium: Scientific Collaboration Key to Preserving the Human Record provides a summary of the meeting.

Summit of Research Scientists (SORS) in Preservation provides a summary of the presentations at the meeting with a spreadsheet showing current research projects by SORS partners.

June 25, 2008 Safety Net II: Integrating Tools Into Your Agency's COOP

This meeting, co-sponsored by FLICC, featured models of continuation of operation plans (COOPs), and resulted in over a dozen FLICC members signing a proclamation of mutual assistance in the event of a collections emergency.

May 15-16, 2008 Preservation Education in the 21st Century

Approximately 60 preservation and conservation leaders, educators, and employers responsible for the preservation of document collections in libraries, archives and museums in the US and abroad convened to distill and synthesize their cumulative experience and vision to identify preservation education priorities for the 21st century.

February 25, 2008 Safety Net I: Networking for Disaster Response

Approximately 30 directors and staff representing US Federal libraries were convened by LC to develop a framework for a network of federal libraries to share mutual assistance in the greater Washington, D. C. region.

December 7, 2006 Safeguarding Document Collections, Part II Meeting convened by LC to update stakeholders on LC's planning strategy and elicited ideas and feedback to help the subsequent shaping of the Library Services Strategic Plan with regard to preservation objectives. Three focus groups discussed research, emergency mitigation, training and other preservation needs and objectives.

Safeguarding Document Collections Meeting convened by LC to gather oral histories of "first preservers" or conservators who aided library and archive collections in the wake of the 2005 hurricane season and review findings of the Heritage Health Index survey pertinent to emergency preparedness for collections and future funding needs.
