In Brief

Newsstand

The following announcements may be of interest to readers. The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) reserves the right to publish announcements selectively, as space permits. The items mentioned, how-ever, are not part of the NLS program, and their listing does not imply endorsement.

Publications about cancer offered in accessible formats

Most American Cancer Society (ACS) publications are now available in audio CD, audio MP3, and accessible PDF formats, thanks to a partnership between ACS and the American Council of the Blind (ACB). A smaller number of those publications are available in braille and large print, and the ACS has redesigned its entire website for screen-reader use.

All special-format publications may be ordered at www.cancer.org/About Us/ACSPolicies/accessibility-at-the-american-cancer-society-policy Link outside of NLS or by calling 1-800-227-2345. This number also serves as a 24-hour hotline for individuals who are blind or visually impaired and wish to speak with a cancer-information specialist.

Medicare and You handbook available in braille

Medicare recipients with vision impairments may now request a braille version of the 2011 edition of Medicare and You, the program’s official handbook, by calling Medicare at 1-800-633-4227. Medicare and You describes recent service changes, details costs and coverage, explains prescription drug plans, and defines the rights of Medicare patients. The publication is also available in large-print and cassette formats.

Pennsylvania Council of the Blind publishes no-measure cookbook

The Pennsylvania Council of the Blind has published a new cookbook for individuals whose physical or visual impairments make precise measurements difficult. The True No-Measure Cook-book includes more than 225 recipes that call for ingredients in amounts of "one can" or "a handful," rather than requiring the use of measuring spoons or cups.

The book is available in braille, large-print, Microsoft Word, and DAISY formats and may be ordered by contacting Sue Lichtenfels at (412) 429-1727 or cookbook@pcb1.org. A braille hard copy costs $25; all other formats cost $12.50.
