MARC Fast-Track Proposal No. 2018-FT01: Adding Subfield $4 to Field 730

1. JUSTIFICATION

Subfield $4 is used in added entry fields 700, 710, 711, 720, 751, and 752 to specify a relationship from the entity described in the record to the entity referenced in the field. When used with a work or expression access point it specifies a relationship between the work or expression described in a record and another work or expression.  The subfield may contain either a code or a URI for the relationship.  For example:

100 1# $a Grahame-Smith, Seth, $e author.
245 10 $a Pride and prejudice and zombies : $b the classic regency romance--now with ultraviolent zombie mayhem / $c by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith.
700 1# $4 http://rdaregistry.info/Elements/w/P10197 $i Parody of (work): $a Austen, Jane, $d 1775-1817. $t Pride and prejudice.

Some works are named with an authorized access point that combines a creator and a title, as in the example above, but other works are named by title alone.  Examples:

Beowulf
Lord’s prayer
Maryland series in contemporary Asian studies
Planet of the apes (Motion picture : 1968)
Star-spangled banner (Song)
Venus de Milo

In order to express a relationship to a work named by title alone, it would be helpful to be able to use a code or URI in subfield $4 of field 730.

130 0# $a Beowulf (Motion picture : 2007)
