Appendix B - Full Level Record Examples

MARC 21 Classification
January 2000

Full record examples based on sections of the Library of Congress Classification, the Dewey Decimal Classification, the National Library of Medicine Classification, and the Universal Decimal Classification. These examples reflect the application of MARC content designators in classification records. For each example record, the lines from the classification scheme being illustrated in the record appear first, introduced by the word Scheme: and information from the DDC Manual (if it appears), introduced by the word Manual; the record follows, introduced by the word Record. In addition, in the case of references generated from tracings, an abbreviated form of the record containing the tracing is given, which includes only the 008, 153 and 453/553 fields. The lines from the scheme are reproduced from the printed version; they are intended to aid in the understanding of the full record example, not as a suggested online display. In some cases, it has been necessary to edit the scheme slightly to encode the data. Fields are shown in numerical tag order; it may be desirable to change their order upon display.

Field 001 contains the phrase <control number> which indicates that the record is an example only. The records lack a system-generated directory, and the system-generated portions of the Leader (LDR) are represented by asterisks (*). Control number fields have not been recorded (field 010 and 035).

The example records are divided into five sets:

LCC SCHEDULE, CLASS HE (WATER TRANSPORTATION)

This example illustrates all records for Library of Congress Classification numbers between HE 380.8 and HE 398. Abbreviated records have been encoded for classification numbers from other portions of the LCC schedules when appropriate to show records with tracings that would generate cross references in this portion of the HE subclass.

LCC TABLE, CLASS P-PZ (LITERATURE)

This example shows records for the first ten numbers in table 1 of the P-PZ schedule (Language and Literature tables). Since most entries in the table consist only of a topic and the number within the table to be added to a classification number from the schedule, the records tend to be quite short. There are no tracings or references within this table. Following is a reproduction of the first ten records of the table:

DDC SCHEDULE, CLASS 003

The following example illustrates MARC classification records for classification numbers between 003.3-003.71 (computer modeling and simulation; theory of communication and control; kinds of systems; large-scale systems) from volume 2 of the Dewey Decimal Classification, 21th edition. Entries from the DDC manual are also encoded in the records when they refer to the classification number in field 153. Examples are shown in numerical tag order; however it may be necessary in some cases to add a subfield $8 (Field link and sequence number) to 6XX and 76X fields to ensure the correct ordering of fields.
