Titles of separate works or parts of an item or the table of contents. The field may also contain statements of responsibility and volume numbers or other sequential designations.

Chapter numbers are generally omitted. This field contains a formatted contents note. Contents information may be encoded at one of two levels; basic or enhanced. For some materials, data normally belonging in other notes or in other areas of description may be included (e.g., the number of pages, pieces, frames in each part).

For mixed materials and materials under archival control, this field may contain the table of contents of a finding aid.

Unformatted contents notes are recorded in field 500 (General Note).

The note is usually displayed and/or printed with an introductory term or phrase that is generated as a display constant based on the first indicator value.

First Indicator - Display constant controller
Controls the generation of an introductory phrase.
0 - Contents
Complete contents of an item. Value 0 is used to generate the display constant Contents:.

Punctuation - Field 505 ends with a period when the field contains complete or partial contents, unless another mark of punctuation or a closing angle bracket (<>) is present or unless the contents continue in another occurrence of field 505. If the field contains incomplete contents, no period is recorded, unless the last word, initial/letter, or abbreviation ends in a period.

In records formulated according to AACR 2, a space-hyphen-hyphen-space ( -- ) is recorded between each item in the contents note unless a delimiter/subfield code follows in which case there is no ending space. In pre-AACR 2 records, items are separated by a period-hyphen-hyphen (.--).

Contents notes may contain prescribed ISBD punctuation (e.g., statements of responsibility are preceded by a space-slash-space ( / )).
Temporary Data - Angle brackets (<...>) are customarily used to enclose holdings of individual volumes, within contents notes that are subject to change.
