(Dec 30, 2008) On November 5, 2008, the Knesset (Israel's Parliament) passed an amendment to the Legal Aid Law, 5732-1972. The amendment requires the legal aid bureau to provide free legal aid to victims of offenses of abduction under conditions of slavery and human trafficking. According to the Law, in addition to legal aid, the bureau also pays for all approved related expenses. Legal aid is provided by staff or non-staff attorneys who are qualified to provide the service.

Legal aid bureaus are established by the Minister of Justice. Information regarding the establishment of legal aid bureaus is published in the official gazette and includes their addresses and geographical jurisdictions. Regulations issued by the Minister establish the criteria and the amounts that are paid for coverage of expenses related to representation in cases approved for legal aid.
