(May 02, 2008) On April 18, 2008, the United Nations Intellectual Property Agency announced that Sao Tome and Principe acceded to the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), a pact designed to stimulate innovation and promote economic activity worldwide. According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in the beginning of April, Sao Tome and Principe deposited the instrument of accession; on July 3, 2008, the treaty will enter into force in the country. After that date, nationals and residents of Sao Tome; and Principe will be able to file patent applications.
