In an effort to prohibit online access to the anti-Islamic film "The Innocence of Muslims," which was produced in the United States, a Lebanese court issued a decision ordering the Lebanese Ministry of Communications to block the viewing of that film on the YouTube website. It was the first such decision in the Arab world. Based on a legal complaint filed by a Lebanese lawyer, on September 24, 2012, the Court of First Instance in the Lebanese capital of Beirut rendered a decision to prevent the film from being viewed on the Internet throughout the country.

Furthermore, as a result of violent events that took place in northern Lebanon during the protests against film, the Military General Prosecutor's Office ordered 45 people to be tried before the Military Court. The Prosecutor's Office accused those individuals of arson for burning an American fast-food restaurant. The protestors also faced charges of resisting law enforcement personnel when some of them began shooting at anti-riot police forces.
