(Nov 23, 2011) On November 14, 2011, the Knesset (Israel's parliament) passed an amendment to the Broadcasting Authority Law, 5725-1965 (as amended). The Law imposes an obligation to pay an annual fee for possession of a television.

The amendment exempts the following categories of people from payment of the mandatory fee: (1) during the period 2012-2016 – soldiers carrying out their mandatory draft military service, if found eligible for subsidized rent based on not having a family or based on the distance of their residence from their service location; and (2) during the period 2012-2013 – senior citizens. (Broadcasting Authority Law, 5725-1965 [in Hebrew], 19 LAWS OF THE STATE OF ISRAEL 103 (5725-1964/65); The Broadcasting Authority (Amendment No. 25) Law, 5772-2011 & bill on soldiers' benefits [both in Hebrew] (both last visited Nov. 23, 2011).)
