(May 08, 2013) For the first time, a Latin-American citizen will lead the World Trade Organization (WTO). Roberto Azevêdo, a Brazilian diplomat, was selected to be the Director-General of the WTO for the next four years. Azevêdo defeated former Mexican Trade Minister Herminio Blanco in the final round of the selection process to determine who will replace current Director-General Pascal Lamy as the new leader of the WTO. According to a statement made on May 8, 2013, by the Chair of the WTO General Council, in conformity with the WTO selection procedures Azevêdo was announced as the candidate who can gain the consensus approval of WTO members. A WTO meeting to formally appoint Azevêdo is expected to be convened during the month of May. The inauguration is set for September 1, 2013. Azevêdo, who is a trade specialist with deep knowledge of the WTO and good negotiation skills, has been the Brazilian ambassador to the institution since 2008.
