(Dec 14, 2011) On December 1, 2011, the European Parliament adopted a resolution granting its consent to Croatian membership in the European Union, with 564 votes in favor, 38 against, and 32 abstentions. The accession treaty is expected to be signed by the heads of state and governments of the EU at the next meeting of the European Council, to be held on December 9, 2011. The President and Prime Minister of Croatia will participate at the signing. The accession will become effective as of July 2013. Croatia plans to hold a referendum on its accession to the EU after the signing of the accession treaty. After a positive outcome of the referendum and following ratification of the accession treaty by the 27 EU Members, Croatia will be a full member of the EU with all the attendant privileges and responsibilities.
