(Mar 14, 2011) On March 8, 2011, the head of Indonesia's Ministry for the Empowerment of Women and the Protection of Children, Linda Agum Gumelar, announced at an event marking International Women's Day that a gender equality law is on the agenda for parliamentary discussion this year. (Indonesia to Introduce Gender Equality Law: Minister, XINHUA (Mar. 8, 2011); website of the Ministry [in Indonesian], (last visited Mar. 14, 2011).)

The Ministry has been working on the project as a step in accelerating 'gender mainstreaming.' Gumelar stated that due to these efforts, "this year parliament will discuss the gender equality matter as one of its agendas." She added, "This is important because our colleagues in parliament will compose 'a gender responsive budget' if they are aware about gender mainstreaming." (XINHUA, supra.)

According to a report published online by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the status of women varies within Indonesia, depending on the region. Overall, 50% of women are economically active, but outside of agricultural work, women constitute only 30% of the workers in the country. The report also states that women have few protections in the workplace. (Gender Equality and Social Institutionsin Indonesia, SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS & GENDER INDEX (last visited Mar. 14, 2011).)
