(Sep 16, 2010) Shiva Nazar Ahari, a journalist arrested in 2009, was tried in September 2010 in Tehran on charges of "warring against God" (Moharebeh), conspiring to commit a crime, propaganda against the Iranian revolution, having ties to the exiled organization People's Mujahedeen of Iran, and disturbing public order. Recently a judge from Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court of Iran released the journalist prior to sentencing, after US$500,000 bail was posted on her behalf, according to reports in the Iranian press. If she is convicted on the Moharebeh charge alone, Ahari could be subject to the death penalty. Ahari's arrest, conditions of detention, and trial have been widely criticized by human rights groups, including the Committee to Protect Journalists (Shiva Nazar Ahari, CPJ website (Apr. 1, 2010), http://www.cpj.org/tags/shiva-nazar-ahari) and Reporters Without Borders (Rally for Shiva Nazar Ahari—Sept. 3, 2010, RWB website (Sept. 7, 2010), http://en.rsf.org/rally-for-shiva-nazar-ahari-sept-3-07-09-2010,38304.ht
