(Mar 06, 2009) On February 24, 2009, the Government of Ukraine passed a regulation to establish new amounts for car registration and state car inspection fees. The fees will be differentiated based on the age of the car and the size of its engine. As of July 2009, when the regulation enters into force, the amount of the car registration fee will be equal to the engine's capacity, at the rate of one Hrivna (national currency unit equal to US$0.15) per cubic centimeter. It is expected that this measure will promote the purchase of smaller and more fuel efficient cars.

A fee that accompanies the annual mandatory state inspection of a car's overall condition, used primarily to replenish the national highway construction fund, will be set at the maximum rate for new cars and those that are up to seven years old. Owners of cars that are from seven to ten years old will pay 80 percent of the fee. Lower percentages are introduced for cars that are more than 10 years old. This measure was advocated by defenders of consumer rights, who argued that owners of older cars had already paid their fair share of fees and that they generally spend less time on the road.
