Portugal: Parliament Rejects Same-Sex Marriage

(Oct. 20, 2008) On October 10, 2008, the Portuguese Parliament rejected two proposed laws that were presented by two minority parties (Bloco Esquerdista e Verde) that would have amended the Portuguese Civil Code to allow persons of the same sex to marry and to adopt children. According to the Portuguese Prime-Minister, José Sócrates, marriage between persons of the same sex is an issue that should first be discussed by the society.
