Egypt: Fatwa Against Marriage to Israeli Women

(Dec. 2, 2007) A former undersecretary of Al-Azhar (an Egyptian University connected to a mosque in Cairo), Sheikh Farhat Saeed al-Munji, issued a fatwa (Islamic religious edict) in which he prohibits Muslim men from marrying Israeli women. The justification for his fatwa is that, among other factors, the children born to a Muslim man would also become Jews under the laws applied in Israel. This fact constitutes, in his opinion, a danger to the national security of Arab and Muslim countries.
