Bangladesh; Russian Federation: Agreement to Build Nuclear Power Plant

(Mar. 15, 2011) On February 24, 2011, the Government of Bangladesh entered into a preliminary agreement with Russia in which Russia will build Bangladesh’s first nuclear power plant. The planned plant would generate 2,000 megawatts of electricity per day. The preliminary agreement provides that the countries will cooperate on the design, construction, and operation of two nuclear reactors at the plant, on nuclear fuel supply, and on nuclear waste management. The two countries will establish a joint coordination committee to control the implementation of the agreement. The countries are expected to sign a final agreement in April 2011.
